PRETEND is a game of make-believe. One player, the GM (Game Manager), acts as a storyteller and referee. The GM narrates the group's experience. The GM introduces locations, mysteries, conflicts, and treasures. They decide on rewards and consequences as the story unfolds.
Besides the GM, the game needs 3 or 4 other players. Each player role-plays as a character of their creation called a PC (Player Character). Each PC starts the game at LEVEL 1. PCs grow in power whenever they gain a LEVEL. They do this by ADVENTURING. That means completing quests, solving puzzles, and defeating foes. Players must work together to LEVEL UP.
The rules in this book are a foundation for the game. Sometimes, the GM will need to use their own special rules. The GM may request a dice roll when a PC tries something difficult. Players roll d12 (12-sided dice) to decide the outcome.
Players can use this book to fill out a CHARACTER SHEET. There are boxes to enter their character's NAME and stats. The DETAILS section is where players can use their imagination. DETAILS include their character's personality, backstory, appearance, and dreams.
